“California knows how to party.” Tupac Shakur

Cannabis is legal now, at least in California, so you can relax, right? Yes, but let’s not be lax about shopping for weed. The green rush has created a wealth of new businesses, some with higher standards than others—plus, regulations vary by county and city, so it’s always a good idea to do your research. To take the stress out of shopping, we’ve created a guide to purchasing cannabis, legally and locally.

California regulations require cannabis operations to be licensed by the state.

Look for a licensed operation.

Whether you’re shopping by delivery or dispensary, look for an operation licensed for adult use. You’ll need to show your driver’s license or passport to buy recreational cannabis. If you’re shopping for medical marijuana, make sure the provider has a medical license, and be prepared to show a medical marijuana card at purchase. Some operations have both adult and medical licenses.

Whether it’s pure CBD, indica, sativa or a hybrid, quality product should always be certified, sealed and labeled.

Pick good product.

In California, all cannabis products are required to be:

Sealed in childproof or tamper-evident packaging

Tested to state standards

Testing certification should be shown on the packaging. If for some reason it’s not shown, the product should be labeled as untested to state standards.

Cannabusiness is in need of design makeover. Increasingly, dispensaries are losing the head-shop vibe in favor of modern interiors with a light and airy look.

For personalized service, visit a dispensary.

While some dispensaries are creating a more normalized experience, many still have a head-shop vibe to them. Still, there are advantages to visiting a dispensary, including knowledgeable staff who can help you choose what’s right for you. A few things to keep in mind:

You’ll need to show your license at the entrance, just as you’d show ID to enter a 21+ club. Just don’t expect to slip some cash to the bouncer and skip the line.

Inside, most products will be behind a glass case, and a “budtender” will answer your questions and pull what you want to purchase.

Some stores have their full inventory available on an electronic menu. If you don’t see something, don’t be afraid to ask—the budtender may be able to locate it for you.

Most budtenders are informed and passionate about their products. If you’re a new user and want to start slow, tell them you’d like to “microdose” or try low-THC cannabis. (See this article for more on microdosing.)

In California, services like eaze.com deliver cannabis to your door.

For convenience, use a delivery service.

There are two types of delivery services:

Dispensaries that offer delivery and pickup (just like your favorite pizza place)

On-demand delivery services (just like your favorite takeout app)

Dispensaries are great if they’re nearby and a trusted resource, while on-demand delivery services are best if you need a wide range of products and there’s no dispensary in your neighborhood.

In either scenario, you can usually order online and pay when your delivery arrives. Be prepared to show a photo ID verifying you’re over 21, and expect to pay cash (exact change is preferred). Timing and hours of delivery are dependent on the service and state/city regulations.

The grass is greener in California, and it’s usually cash-only.

Prepare to pay cash, with a high sales tax.

Grass costs a lot of green. Most dispensaries and delivery services are still figuring out how to accept credit payments under federal regulations. That makes cash the main form of payment.

It’s said that nothing is certain, except death and taxes, and taxes are just about the only thing that’s assured with the legalization of cannabis. The rate can range from 15-25%, depending on what city or county you’re shopping in.
